when it happens you can turn off the left mag, and then the right mag in the air and there is NO EFFECT. Full carb heat does not help either.

I'm going to focus on the above. Perhaps your "P-lead" is the problem.
This is the wire that grounds the magnito, taking the electricty away from
the spark plug and killing the engine. This is what one does when one
"turns off" the mags. If this ground connection is flaky, it could exhibit
the very behavior you are seeing.
