advice in this forum.]----

I have a 1965 Alon with latching fuel caps on the wings, no air vent.
They do not screw on, rather there is a latching or clamping mechanism
which secures the cap to the tank. The header tank is vented and twists
on. I don't know if the wing caps are standard or not.

Since the wing tanks don't vent through the caps, they must vent through
the supply and/or return lines. This results in pressurized tanks and
oil-canning sounds when I loosen the caps and relieve the pressure. No
damage noted anywhere so far and none expected, it's probably been that
way for years.

When the plane sits in the summer, even in a shade hanger, I get fuel
spillage from the header tank cap as the wing tank contents expands and
vents through the header tank. My solution to that has been to loosen
the wing tank caps so the air can vent directly.

The left side cap is fussy about being clamped on just right. If not,
when I take off I can see fuel leaking and evaporating from the cap.
I've several times had to land and adjust it. Fortunately I can do this
without getting out of the plane....probably I could do this even while
flying, but it seems risky and I've never tried. I should replace the
gaskets probably.
