John::
You made a wise decision in requesting clarification from the "Coupers," regarding one of the peculiarities of the Ercoupe/Aircoupe.  I would imagine more Coupe problems have been caused rather than resolved by mechanics who will not ask questions.  If you have a mechanic that is willing to ask questions before he acts, keep him, and surround yourself with the service literature specific to your airplane.
the information is available right here at the "Coupers" site and from Skyport Services, 800-624-5312.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Fuel Pump

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

While replacing fuel pump on '67 A2A, mechanic is surprised to find, the diameter of the orifice in the out-take connector is smaller than the diameter in the in-take connector of the pump. Can someone suggest a reason for this difference in diameters? Is it an anomaly with a purpose? The plane flies OK with this configuration on the pump. However, the mechanic intends to conform both connectors to the larger diameter on the new pump. Any thoughts?
