I used the "paint-on" on my wingwalk. I think it looks great and no chance of time built corrosion under it.

no- that's the problem. Nobody has yet explained how but it does. The
newer discs are 1/4" thick as opposed to the original ercoupe discs being
only 1/8" thick. It ends up being the same piston area and the same disc
surface area (albeit thicker) and maybe it's just the combination of new
discs, new pucks and having the pistons in a different location that does
it. Maybe what we are seeing is Goodyears that have worn discs and worn
pucks and the pistons are near the end of their travel, hence poor
braking.

All I know is they work excellent, and maybe that's how all Ercoupe
Goodyears worked when they were new- they will lock the wheels at any
speed; you have to be careful after touchdown to make sure your weight is
all back on the gear before tromping on the brakes. While taxiing I was
able to apply firm pressure and squeal the tires like a car (in fact a
few heads turned).

I've owned a coupe with clevelands and two with the Goodyears. I forget
who did this originally, it's not my idea- anyone who does this has
similar comments about improved braking. These are also the brakes that
came on the Cessna 170 and other early Cessna models.

Anyone else out there have a better explanation?

Can someone tell me where to get a towbar online for a single fork nose gear. Any real light ones to carry with the plane that fit into the baggage compartment?

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Rudder Bellcrank Bolts and Nuts?

Hi,
I have successfully removed my horizontal stabilizer. We looked at the
rudder bellcrank and noticed some play in it. I replaced the nuts and bolts
that hold the top and the bottom half of the bellcrank together. This
eliminated the play in the bellcrank.
I would like to now be able to confirm that I have the correct type of
AN hardware in the assembly. Unfortunately the parts manual does not show
this hardware. I did look at the service memorandums relating to the rudder
bellcrank but those figures also stop short of showing those nuts and bolts
although they do show the holes that they go through. There have been some other
hardware irregularities on the aircraft so I do not want to just assume that
what I removed was correct. I am importing the aircraft so I need to be
able to prove what I have on the aircraft conforms to how it was certified.
If anyone can let me know what type of nuts and bolts are supposed to go
in there I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks again

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] ALON WINDOW SNAP VENTS

My ALON needs some cockpit ventilation - too difficult for me to open and close the canopy in flight. I'd like to install 3 1/4 " snap vents, one on each side window panel, aft rear corners. I've been advised to cut the hole with a very fine tooth hole -cutter/drill. Conversely, another source recommends a hand tool, somewhat like a protractor, with a central pointed knob to press into a drilled tiny hole, while turning the tool blades to cut the circular hole to the precise size. Any suggestions ? Don Bowen

All Alons need more cockpit ventilation, Make sure the canopy will clear the vents as it slides back.

I don't understand your input , Wayne. I intend to mount the vents in the forward windshield, not in the canopy or rear windows. I don't see where/how any canopy interference will result. Don Bowen

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Wing Walk Material Removal

John,

I removed the wing walk material from my plane a few months ago. The only
way that I found that would remove it was to heat the material up with a heat
gun, and then use a plastic putty knife to scrape the stuff off. The material
that was on my plane was the glued-on sheet of sandpaper type stuff. I found
that MEK would take the grit off of the plastic backing, but it would not
disolve or loosen the plastic backing. Only the heat gun was able to "melt" the
adhesive enough to allow me to remove it. The heat gun worked well. After all
the plastic was off, I used MEK to remove what was left of the adhesive.

Of course, if you decide to use the heat gun and MEK, be careful not to
ignite the fumes from the MEK with the heat gun. That would be a bad thing.

As a side note, I like the way the stick-on stuff looks, but after I removed
mine, I found that I had a bit of light surface corossion starting to form
where the stick-on stuff left an air space around each of the raised rivet heads.
For that reason, I'm going to use the paint-on stuff, even though it doesn't
look quite as good. If you do use the stick on stuff, make sure that the
primer and paint under it are in good shape, and make sure the edges of the
material are sealed well so that no moisture can get under it.

Best Regards,

Wayne

Subject: Re: [COUPERS-TECH] Rudder Bellcrank Bolts and Nuts?

Hi Norm,

You're right. Parts manual and price lists are silent as to these
bolts.

I took an assembly apart. They were 10-32 thread with AN320-3 shear
nuts and AN320-2-2 cotter pins, and appear to be AN3-10, with a nominal
length of 1-1/32" and a grip of 5/8", drilled shank only. The
originals had a large "X" on the head, with an upper case "E" above and
below and a dot left and right (for which I have no cross-reference).

While the Ercoupe Parts Listings available to me do not list these
bolts as having been stocked by Sanders, both Forney and Alon do.
Mooney used another type of rudder bellcrank.

For an authoritative answer, call Univair and speak with Craig Baldwin.
Ask him to look at drawing 415-52424 and/or F-52424. There should be
a call-out as to the bolt and nut specified by each manufacturer. Let
us know what you learn.

Regards,

WRB

Pete Hogan made a little device that will allow him to 'crack' the canopy
in flight, and holds it a couple of inches open. Pretty nice. It's just a bit of
wood (he makes the best custom railings on the Eastern seaboard) which attaches
at the top center and holds the thing in place.

Serves y'all right for wanting them fancy Ay-lons all 20 years spanking newer
with them big city instrument panels and metal wings and such. We 415 drivers
just open the sliders and get to sit closer to our pretty girls to boot. So
take that and your extra 50 pounds gross weight and C-90s and put it in your
proverbial pipes...

All in good fun, as ever. (Alons are just lovely, and deep down, we're just
jealous. Except when it's over 85 out.)

Our dear friend Leslie Holbrook, of the 'Flying Colors' Ercoupe, has NO wing
walk. I've flown with her a couple of times, and if you have decent tennies,
you don't actually need an ice-axe to get into the airplane :-)

And it's real easy to get out. Just step out, sit on the wing and say 'whee!'

I fly too many Young Eagles to even consider the idea, but if I didn't, I'd let
things stay 'naked' and maybe keep a pair of overshoes (rubbers) in the baggage
compartment for passengers who showed up wearing their hobnail boots.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Nose Bowl Mounted Landing Light

Hi Again All...

Loking for info regarding mounting a landing light in the nosebowl of our coupe.

Does anyone out ther have any ideas how this can be done. What type of brackets ans such and how they are mounted?

Also has anyone mounted a Warp Drive prop on their 'Coupe? Any speculation on the specs for climb cruise etc.

Thanks and Cheers
