Don:

I had similar problems with my mags. I have Eisemans. I used to have to take the back covers off and put a heat gun to them to get them to start. I had received several pieces of advice to trade them in for a pair of slicks. Then one guy told me that Eiseman's were perfectly good magnetos and all of the parts are available, they can be rebuilt for about $150 a piece. So I did rebuild them, the left mag is the only one with an impulse coupling. This fixed my starting problems because the impulse coupling spring was weaker then the new one. The gasket on the back covers were dryied out and broken on both mags and the new gaskets now keep the humidity out. The rest of the internals were replaced though they did not look bad at all, but since I had them, why not?
The harness was replaced earlier so that was not the problem either. The plugs were a mess but I cleaned them and they are now are worn but clean and work OK.
It seems like the gaskets and the spring were the only items that really needed replacing, but the mags are as good as new now with new bearings, seals, points, condensers, etc.
And they are still the original equipment.
