I sure hope Steve Austin gets his engine failure problem defined and corrected, and that he ceases making attempts at getting airborne until that happens. Please keep us informed on your progress. There were 297 ALONs built in 1965-67. There were 59 MOONEY CADETS built 1969-70. Their engines and fuel systems are virtually identical, including applicable Service Bulletins. My guess is that most of these airplanes are still flying - and not experiencing engine failures. I have a '65 ALON and have never experienced an engine failure here in hot, hot Florida. I have had incorporated many, but not all, of the SB mandates, e.g., my Stromberg carb has been overhauled/modified, my gascolator has been inspected, cleaned and gaskets and "o" ring replaced, all the hoses in my engine compartment are new, including the fuel line gascolator to carb which is Firesleeve encased , runs uphill and does not touch the LH exhaust. My recently overhauled C-90 engine has new baffles and runs quite cool. No matter how many times the SB No. 19 wording about "certain conditions...can cause fuel starvation, etc." are repeated to me, no explanation has been offered re WHAT the conditions are or what, exactly, are the benefits of lowering the gascolator another 3-4 inches! I believe Steve's ALON , being one of the last ones made, probably has all the SSB 19 provisions incorporated - yet he is having the stall problem. John Wright, Jr, overhauled/rebuilt my header tank. It has been leak-free ever since. I am extremely reluctant to remove the tank for re-plumbing (after removing the instrument panels, radois, control couumns wheels , etc., to get at it) in order to permit cutting holes in my firewall and lowering my gascolator. I respectfuly ask our Couper friend and respected "guru",JohnCooper at SKYPORT, what comments he can give in this matter. I have asked the NTSB for final reports on their determined causes of the handful of ALON engine failure incidents and accidents, under the Freedom of Information Act. They didn't say "No", so I'm still hopng to hear more from them. I't be particularly interested in whether or not these airplanes were using auto gas. I do appreciate the informative posts from Coupers like Wayne Delrossi and William Bayne .
