Based on what the two of you have said, I think maybe I have leaned

It is difficult to correctly adjust the idle mixture on a Stromberg,
for procedural reasons. The most accurate way is with the engine
running. Unfortunately, there seems to be some sort of mesmerizing
effect of that whirling meat cleaver in front, and some folks find
this method fatal. That said, the way to do it is to lean the
mixture until the engine begins to stumble, then richen it until you
reach maximum RPM. Set the idle speed to the desired speed plus 25
RPM. Repeat until no further rpm increase can be obtained by
adjusting the mixture. Finally, richen the mixture further until
desired idle speed is obtained.
