Who out there shuts down the engine by leaning out the mixture? My CFI said it is an alternate way to stop the engine.

Hi Scott,

He's right. Once, returning from a cross-country I forgot to return the mixture to full rich after cruising leaned at altitude.
When I reduced power on downwind, the fire went out. Amazing how long those few seconds it took to figure out what had happened and correct the mixture seemed, but normal operation resumed virtually automatically thereafter.

Personally, I think turning off the fuselage tank valve is the best (not "alternate") way to stop the engine (and carb leaks) when on the ground.

Frankly, this question only seems relevant if your coupe's useable endurance is currently determined by oil consumption (I had a coupe with that problem, but did a "top" overhaul which fixed it). Can't answer your specific question.

I've confirmed a significant difference in fuel consumption, though. In any "full throttle" operation, your carb goes into a "super-rich" mode providing more fuel than the engine can convert into power (designed that way for cooling purposes). For more economical high power setting cruise, one must lean (at any altitude) until RPM starts to drop, and then enrichen just enough to restore the lost RPM. You save (don't waste) otherwise excess "cooling" fuel this way.

I've never done constant full throttle T&Gs :<).

Just boring holes in the sky locally, I have chosen speeds between 60 and 100 mph; but never noticed much difference in oil consumption per operating hour.

WRB
