Scott,
As Kevin said, the Stromberg carburetor cannot be shut down by leaning the mixture.  What you need to do is turn off the mag switch.  William Bayne said he turns off the fuel valve, but this can take a bit longer to shut the engine down.  I've owned my Ercoupe for 23 years and flown it over 1750 hours, and shutting off the mag switch works fine for me.
As far as oil consumption goes, if you're using a quart in less than 3 hours, no matter what kind of flying you're doing, you'd better be concerned about the health of your engine.

Hi -

I few questions:

  • Who out there shuts down the engine by leaning out the mixture? My CFI said it is an alternate way to stop the engine.

  • What is the oil consumption (best WAG % ) difference between constant full throttle climbs / T &Gs, and moderate cruise for oil consumption?
Thanks -

Scott
