Hey Darick: I would not drain out all of the hydraulic fluid. If you place
the end of the line that comes from the firewall to your hydraulic master
cylinder as high as you can get it, it should not leak fluid. You can/should put
a plug in the line too. Put a cap on the line you remove from the cylinder that
goes to the brakes. In fact, you may want to check/ replace this portion of the
line, and even the one that comes from the firewall. They get old and
stiff/brittle, and since you are removing the cylinder to repair, it may be just
the time to replace those flexible lines.
As far as the O rings are concerned, I would call
John at Skyport and order kit # SMK-53. I assume you have an original Ercoupe,
so that should have what you need for seals. The piston rod has a tendency to
wear, and if new seals do not fix the seepage problem you may want to consider
changing the complete master cylinder.
