This is not exactly what happens. The STC itself does not "make it a
D". The STC, as issued, is only applicable to the "D" model, so the
path most folks take is to convert to a "D" then do the engine
conversion. Installation in any other model, lower or higher,
requires a field approval. The STC may be used as "acceptable data"
in support of the field approval.
An inspector could (and some have) issue a field approval for the
installation in a C or CD and that plane would still be eligible for
use under Light Sport rules.
