I've been getting by with the 13 amp generator although about a year
ago I bought a 35 amp generator which is still sitting in my garage.
My battery is less than 2 years old. If I can lose more weight
(personally) I won't feel too bad about putting the 35 amp unit (+6#)
and then I can burn my landing lamps while in the pattern. Otherwise,
I use an old King (Wentworth) cavity tube transponder w/ encoder,
Whelen wingtip strobes, Microair 760 radio, ANR (headsetsinc.com) and a
portable intercom + 2 Garmin C96 units, and the 13 amp generator is ok
with it. Personally, my wallet isn't fat enough to think alternator.
In other words, if your battery is good enough for normal service and
you don't have to wait eons on a taxiway, the load you are
contemplating will be fed by the little old generator once you get
cooking. If you are a Sport Pilot, you're not supposed to need landing
lights (I had to twice when I was unavoidably detained - fortunately I
have night experience from my days (nights) as a Private Pilot and no
one was about at the airport to catch me). When they're on, my 13 amps
isn't enough, but for the few minutes use, I figured my battery would
be up to it.
If the XCOM radio works well, I think it has a built in intercom. When
I got my Microair 760, the XCOM was very new to the market and I was
aware that earlier Microairs had bugs that supposedly were chased out
of the version (N) I got (they have updated it twice since then - and
so it goes), so I got the Microair (not trusting the NEW EXCOM), and it
does barely clear the cowl tank.
