Tim.
A com radio, transponder/ mode C, GPS and intercom is pretty common between all small planes. Mine has that too and the generator is dealing fine with that load. You might add even a strobe or two without overloading the system. The landing lights will usually take more juice than the generator can produce. Energy will then be taken from the battery. However, since the lights are used only for a short time, it will not empty the battery too much. I flew many nights with nav/com, transponder, intercom and nav lights plus the strobe on the belly and even adding the handheld GPS did not overload the system.
I'd say stick with your generator until it needs replacement.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Generator vs alternator

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

Here are the facts.  415 C with no radio's, yet.  C85 with generator.  Now live under B class airspace and have to have a transponder with mode C.  If I have to install the transponder with mode C, I might as well get rid of the handheld radio and install a panel mount com radio.  While I'm at it why not a intercom system and Garmon 396.

Okay now I am going from no radio's to a com radio, transponder/ mode C, GPS and intercom.

Here is the question.  Do I need to change over to an alternator and if so then why?

Opinion anyone?

Thanks,

Tim
