I could probably come off a lot smarter if I could actually look at and touch the plane, but, I'm wondering if those cracks weren't there the whole time, just covered over. First thing I'd do is remove a little paint and see if it's just aluminum or something else under.
Regardless, it looks like the damage is, as you suspect, due to prior damage that wasn't repaired correctly.
