Hey Darrell: The welts are one piece and should be kept that way. If you
have the straight windshield, you will have a piece above the rear track that
you remove to move the windows in and out of the track. If you have the bubble
windshield, you can remove the strap over the top of the windshield. This will
allow you to pull the windows out by sliding the welt out of the way, on the
front corner and pulling the window all the way out. You may have a screw put
through the rear track in the center that will have to come out also. That is
used so you can lock the Coupe.
When you put the new welts in place, you will need
several strips of thick card board about 2 inches wide, with straight edges.
After putting the glue in the channel and placing the welt in the channel, put
the cardboard strips in the welt and leave them in place for a day or two to let
the glue set up completely. Make sure that you put the welt in place by putting
the felt on the outside of the welt. The welts go in place with the felt on the
bottom of the channels. You can purchase the stuff you need from John at
Skyport.
It is possible to put the welts in place without
removing the side panels, but that requires some ingenuity. I have managed to do
it by using a yard stick and thumb tacks. When you pull the seat pan up, you can
see/reach the ends of the window channels (The baggage compartment has to be
open to reach the rear channels) By attaching the welt to the end of the yard
stick with the thumb tack, you can push the welt all the way down the track. If
you have put some glue on the welt/track, and use the cardboard to force it into
the proper position, you can end up with a decent job. The hardest part is
usually to get the channels cleaned out of all the old glue.
If you tackle the welts first, and then make your
windows, it should work out OK. The windows are basically a square cut sheet
approximately 19 5/8 inches wide and about 32 inches long, with the ends riveted
(or screwed) in place. Make sure you drill the holes in the Plexiglas at least
1/32 larger than the fastener.
Let us know how you make out.
