After I had my Ercoupe jump started by a shop next to my hangar ($10) and got going, I aborted the trip as the turbulence was nasty - I was to go to another airport for a Wings lesson, which I concluded would make no sense with the plane getting flopped about so. Ended up taking the battery home and charging it with my old motorcycle battery charger - does a nice slow charge that batteries like.
Where is this going? Someone pointed out to me that doing this put me in the air with a virtually dead battery which violates an FAR that sez that you need to have enough for 30 minutes (?) operation in the event of electrical system (e.g. charging system) failure. I was being hasty and also figured the other airport was 45 min. away so I'd charge up enough, but in hind sight, not an excellent idea with a 13 amp. generator on a dead 35 AH battery (I had foolishly failed to turn off the master the time before).
