First, I am no avionics expert.

I doubt if your problem is caused by the engine or charging system.  Those
issues do not "broadcast" with enough power to reach the receiving station,
otherwise you'd be interfering with other's transmissions too.  Your radio
is the only one close enough to receive the interference.  It is possible,
but not likely, that something is getting into the power side of the radio
and effecting it, but, as I said, not likely.

A degrading component in the transmitter, mentioned IIRC by Ed, is a
possibility, but, again, I feel unlikely as they generally eventually give
up the ghost completely.

A common contributor to transmission issues is the ground connection between
the antenna and the skin of he aircraft.  I think that's where I'd start.
Corrosion builds up on the skin under the antenna and causes all sorts of
problems.

Lastly, the ARC series of radios wasn't that hot when they were new....
