TKM (Michel) makes a slide in replacement. The TKM's are bulletproof and about
1/3rd the cost of their King and Narco brothers. I have one in my Bonanza
(different model) and it's been fine for 6 years now. Watch Ebay for them,
they do come up on occasion, and know what exact model you're bidding on (A,B,
C, etc.) before you go there. They're about $1500 new. But, if you're not
using the OMNI, the little Icom 760 transceiver (which, incidentally is the
same radio that King repackages) is a real good one for about $900 new.

  Linda,

  A couple of observations.

You wrote that one time it had failed, then you shut off the engine and shut
off the radio and master switch. You then, after some interval, turned power
back on (but not the engine) and it worked OK.

Dang, that sure sounds like a weak component. As John Cooper said, weak
components usually proceed to failure pretty quickly.

I'm guessing it is replacement radio time and you've already got that in the
works.

Hey, guys, isn't there an actual modern, good-power-output radio that is a
slide in replacement for that old brick? Besides having a bad reputation,
didn't those old radios have very low power output? I remember that my Genave
Alpha 200 only had a nominal output of 1.5 watts, the same as my Sporty's
handheld.

It might be best to go right to a new or refurbished radio even if it does
require installation. (Says the guy who used a Sporty's handheld for his only
radio for 10+ years.) Some of those new radios list power output as 8 watts.

  Ed
