Craig brings up a very valuable point.  By the regs, I don't think those old
radios are even legal (though no one is chasing the owners down).

Heck, your problem could even be frequency drift whereas the new radios lock
much tighter to a much narrower frequency tolerance. (Though I'd bet on an
amplifier but it's all wild guessing.)

And, more and more airports and control functions now use the frequencies
that your old radio or a similar replacement can't even tune.  I'd expect
that to be extra true in your densely populated part of California.

Are we making your holiday budget a bit more stressed?  <sigh>
