Eric.
I guess you are looking for some bargains here. If you haven't done so , put
your request out on http://www.ercoupeowners.com/swap/swapbook.htm
It all depends of course on your general desire and flying habits. If you want
the new panel look, you better buy new instruments. If you like the old panel
style of the forties, you can find good stuff on EBay sometimes. Bad thing is
that some of the old instruments were using slightly radioactive paint for
night illuminated numbers which is been thrown away by law by the avionic shops
when they overhaul your instrument. You need a good shop that can produce a
dial that looks like the forties then - some can do that.
Have your airspeed meter overhauled no matter what. Or get a new one.

I would not spend a penny on a mechanical DG or attitude indicator these days.
Save your money for a glass panel. Put a T&B in instead. If these instruments
were run off two big venturies, throw those drag irons away. IF you fly a lot
at night or IFR , ok get yourself a nice glass panel. Otherwise, I don't see
much use of the latter instruments in a Day VFR coupe.

If you go for the glass panel and you fly a lot at night, I see the need for a
35 amp generator. You might consider the alternator conversion though.

This is just my opinion, I might be wrong as I was before.

Ercoupers,

N415E needs all vacuum indicators and the altimeter replaced. Unfortunately,
of the good things I got on the deal, I got killed on the avionics.

Any thoughts on where to find ( and I am not picky) an altimeter, airspeed,
dg, and attitude indicator? Also would like 35a generator if anyone knows of
one.

THANKS for the help on the master cylinder/caliper issue; John at Skyport got
me all the o rings for $15!

*As several noted back in October, EAA's "Sport Aviation" published a
feature article about my Ercoupe restoration in the "What our Members are
Building & Restoring" column. Following that story, the editor of sister
publication "Sport Pilot & Light Sport Aircraft" asked me to expand on the
story and talk about my new Sport Pilot privilige earned last June. *

*The new article is in this month's issue and I have posted a URL to some
screenshots of the article. It may be hard to read from the images I
posted. If you would like a copy that is easier to read, send me a note and
I will send you a pdf (its large for dial up lines and you need Adobe
Acrobat reader to view it). I mention all the help provided here and the
EOC. It was edited in a way that makes it sound like the EOC and the
reflector are one in the same and I was not able to mention each individual
who helped along the way so far. I do appreciate everyone in this community!

I used Proseal several years ago to seal the bottom of my header tank where
some of the rivets around the fuel outlet were allowing fuel to seep out and
it worked great. It still doesn't leak. It was much easier than removing
    the tank.

    Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Fuel Tank Strainers

    Hi All....

I have a question about the fuel strainers (fine mesh screens) which are an
integral part of the brass fittings which screws into the fuel tanks.

Mine seem to be the original ones made of brass and soldered directly into
the fittings

Question is, is there a replacement for these strainers/fittings, or are
they repair in the field (RIF)? The A/C spruce ones are too large both in
fitting size and mesh count to be used. (anyone looking for a pair?)

    Any help would be great.

    Many Thanks

    Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] 415C Wiring Harness

A new wiring harness was installed on my 1946 415C Ercoupe during a recent
annual. My Ercoupe has the small top plugs and does not have the cowling
extensions that allow the larger plugs. I don't know where the FBO bought the
wiring harness but it had to be modified because the threads on the harness
wires would not fit the threads on the top plug caps. So the FBO mechanics
separated the top 4 wires of the harness, removed the nuts, and installed the
nuts from the old wiring harness. They made a mistake on two of the wires
resulting in partial or intermitent firing of two of the top plugs. It took
several months to identify the problem. If I ever need another new wiring
harness does anyone know where I can buy one that does not have to be modified
to fit the two 4 plugs? (I do not want to install the cowling extensions).
Thanks. I appreciate your help.

    Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] radios: TSO'd or non-TSO'd

Regarding whether our radios need to be TSO'd or not: I sent the following
inquiry regarding the XCOM radio to [EMAIL PROTECTED], after they had
written to me
that the XCOM radio is not TSO'd but is "FCC & FAA approved" for all except
IFR use. Below that is XCOM's reply. I recall that we have one or two
(present or former?) FAA folks on our list, and wonder if one of them, or
anyone who knows the regs, could please clarify this for us all? Thank you
    --
    --Linda

    Can you please
explain the following further? "FCC and FAA-approved
and can be used in any aircraft with the exception of
IFR category aircraft." What kind of "approved" is
this, if not a TSO? I ask with reference to my local
(USA) FSDO examiner who told me that I can only put
TSO'd radios in my certified aircraft (1946 Ercoupe
415-C). You may limit your remarks to VFR use and
ignore the IFR issue, as I am flying under Sport Pilot
rules and not allowed to go IFR.

    Subject: Re: XCOM Information Required
There is NO requirement to have a TSO'd radio in a VFR aircraft. Its a
requirement to have a TSO's transponder because its part of the air
navigation system but a radio doesnt need a TSO.... example being
Microair, XCOM and all the handhelds which are in LSA aircraft. FAA and FCC
certification are enough.... tell him to check his regulations. Thanks

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] High time Ercoupe airframes....?

We have an Ercouper in Region 7 that has about 6600 hours on his Ercoupes
airframe. The airplane has no time or fatigue related issues that I'm aware
of. My own Ercoupe has about 3,700 hours TTAF.

    Anyway, we're wondering;

    1) How many 'high time' Ercoupe airframes are out there? (I'm guessing
that 'high time' could be defined as more than 5,000 hours however; that's open
to debate.)

    2) How many hours do the 'high time' airfames in the fleet have on them?

    3) What unique (fatigue?) maintenance & repair issues have occurred for
those higher time airframes, if any?

No comments about 'high time Ercoupers', please!!!! ;-)

This is probably good for open discussion however feel free to contact me
