With regard to the ELT question...here is the answer:

Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) is required on all aircraft with some exceptions. FAR 91.207. 50 nm training flights are exempted. The ELT battery must be replaced after one hour of use or on a date of expected half-life. The ELT must be placarded and signed as to date of installation and the expiration dates of this half-life. The logbooks also require a signature by an Airframe & Power Plant (A&P) for this information.

Gordon.
You are right when you are talking about the two holes that are aside the prop. left , right makes cooling for the cylinders.
The hole under the prop provides cooling air to the oil tank.
The latter is to be covered.

Would not taping up nose openings possibly over heat cylnders without raising the oil temps?

The Tanis engine heater system includes an oil sump cover along with
covers for the intake tubes in addition to the cyl. head heaters. So I
would guess there is nothing wrong with covering the sump . I had a
415-C with the Tanis. In my opinion the sump cover was primarily used
to help the electric heating pad heat the sump. I never bothered to
remove the cover in the summer, it did not seem to make any difference
in the oil temp. Craig 9772M

Is it required to have a working ELT in the plane before the mechanic can
sign off the annual inspection?

Can the inspection be finished without it?

I think you have to mark it inoperative and that's it.
I remember my first flight lessons in a Tomahawk where my instructor an I simulated looking for the ELT, because it was not there yet. Back then I lifted a cover and yelled ELT check. Under the cover was nothing. I did not know how an ELT looked like, but we practiced. The ELT was in for repair I was told.

Subject: Re: [COUPERS-TECH] Why a Coupe?

Friends.

Here a short summery, a hitlist so to say on the reasons to go with an Ercoupe.

1. Flying characteristics. The Ercoupe is perceived as a friendly flyer.
2. Purchase price. Even with prices around 30k, still a bargain in the LSA class 3. Visibility, Safe aircraft, Classic aircraft, Flying with windows down. Four reasons on place three.
4. Ercoupe is perceived as a real aircraft , not an Ultralight - yep.
5. Flying costs (hourly), side by side seating, ease of landing, Two control, easy x-wind landings are taking the last place.

There are also some downsides on Ercoupe ownership mentioned.

1. Number one being the costs for upkeep. (Someone has to tell Univair that we are NOT Millionaires) 2. A special flying technique has to be learned - not a mainstream flying experience. Emphasized by the more experienced pilots. The Coupe needs a different approach planning. Not many instructors are able to grasp the Coupe.

I am wondering why the two control feature is not being mentioned more often. Either as like or dislike. I am curious why this is rated so low in importance.

When I was out plane shopping I wanted a Classic airplane.
I first had a DC-3 in mind sizewise, but I realized that as someone without much flying experience and hours even on a single engine plane, I would simply not be able to fly that cool retractable twin. My limited budget was also a contributing factor. But the Swift was fitting my budget somehow. Very nice Classic plane - beautiful lines, then again reality was setting in when I read an article about how someone could not get his new plane insured because he had not enough dual engine time. I realized that with 50 hours flying experience I might not even get insurance at all and with reason, I am still learning and I can make mistakes that can become costly. Then I stumbled over the classic lines of the Coupe. It's two control feature was assuring simplicity in flight and also safer flying since I won't stall a cross controlled Ercoupe in the traffic pattern. Impossible in a Coupe was announced. I also realized that I did not need a fast plane. Because all I wanted to do is being up in the air for a few hours. Not going places - and even if so, I was not in a hurry.

So Ercoupe it was. I needed one with a split tail and also a shiny aluminum one. I flew it down from Seattle with my instructor, logging cross country time and that flight changed my life.

So last question for this time. How would you rate the two control idea/feature of our Ercoupes. It gives us the significant outlines of the tail, but also some learning curve when landing in cross winds. What do you think, is that something you can explain a Pilot who earned his wings on Cessna's?

91.207 (d) requires an inspection within 12 calendar months.

However he can finish the annual and note the ELT as a deficiency. You operate the aircraft under the limitations of 91.207 until the ELT is repaired and the deficiency signed off.

Some argue that the ELT should not be part of the annual inspection. My FSDO wants it inspected and the results logged. It doesn't have to be accomplished at the same time as the annual as long as the 12 calendar month interval is adhered to.
