Also, I’m inclined to favor the high accuracy EGT gauges.  I found my
Stromberg carb could control temps to within about 10° of what I wanted (even
though the response to changes on the Stromberg’s mixture control do come
slowly).

 

Perhaps the digital gauges would be more accurate and cheaper.  Does anyone
know?

 

I’m with Eliacim on the four probe idea.  I’ve heard from others that having
four probes is a big advantage in controlling the mixture since the hot
cylinder at one airspeed/angle-of-attack/power-setting can be different from
the hot cylinder at other combinations.  And, in diagnosis, it seems it would
be a big help to have four probes.
