Al lightly touched a good point. Both TCDS-718 and TCDS-787 specifically list 4
ply tires as required equipment, A really stickler IA might not pass your
annual if you have 6 plies. Bill

Dan;

A little something about the 6 ply tire vs. the 4 ply tire you may find
interesting. I'm sharing this because I went from a 6 ply back to the 4 ply on
my Bonanza and will do it when the tire is worn on the Coupe. This was based
upon a discussion on the Bonanza list which although highly reliable, gave me
the incentive to do the research and comparisons myself.

Weight, weight, weight. Although it may only be a around a pound, every extra
ounce on a flying machine counts, especially on the Ercoupe. Given the station
that the extra weight is placed, I wonder how much it changes the flight
characteristics. The Ercoupe's nose and load is well within the limits of
weight that a 4 ply is designed for. Do you really get any more wear from a 6
ply? There's no additional tread depth! If there was any money saved, it was
minimal.

We'll not go into some of the crazy things like the a/c being certificated with
a 4 ply and not a 6, I don't know if that matters.

Not a disagreement, just some food for thought. It's worth what you paid for
it.

Hi Lynn,
I've ordered two (single fork) nose wheel tires from Desser over the past 10
years, and based on my experience they seem to have the best pricing &
availability, and reasonable service.

For the MAIN gear tires I've used;
1) Goodyear Flight Custom III 6 ply tire and have had outstanding service from
them.
2) The other alternative I would consider are the Desser Monster Retreads.

Aviation Consumer rated both tire types very highly, called the retread a best
value, and said that there is no evidence to suggest that the retreads and any
less reliable then new tires.

6 ply tires are heavier & more expensive however; they also wear longer and can
take a bit more abuse. Pick your poison.

Desser's website has loads of information about tires and their care. Did you
know that you really don't have to change a tire due to cracks? That's what
the tire guys say! Read it yourself!

Recaps are fine alternatives. Before going that route, I would check and
compare weights. Every pound counts, especially on an Ercoupe.

Since my project is not yet ready to fly, I'm not bothering about a diet. ;-)
