Folks -

After 40 years in this business, my advice is DON'T do a pre-buy; do an
annual.

No one knows what a pre-buy is - it can be anything from a thorough
pre-flight to almost an annual, and anything in between. Pre-buy has no
defined scope
and detail.

Belly up to the bar and pay for an annual. Then you have a much better idea
of what you're about to bite off.

Jerry,

I agree completely. Pay to get an annual inspection done instead of a
pre-buy. That doesn't mean you have to pay for repairing any discrepancies.
But it
does mean that the A&P/IA is on the hook for doing a complete job including
an AD search. If you've found the plane that you really want to buy, and all
else looks great with the deal, why not go ahead and do an annual on it before
buying it? Better to find out about some major mechanical or paperwork
problem now than in 12 months or less, when you are going to have to do an
annual
anyhow. If you don't want to spend a few more dollars for an annual now, then
you're really not going to want to spend $6K later when you find out that the
engine is full of illegal parts or that the center section has been illegally
repaired.
