As usual you said it better then I. If the FAA CD list a 337 for D conversion that is signed by the IA and the FSDO even if the log books are missing or there is no mention in them then it would be better to assume that the work was done and it is a D. I personally would consider that the aircraft is a D even if the registration still list it as a C and that the owner was negligent in his paperwork.
