Thanks for that suggestion, Willie. Actually we have several SLSA 
aircraft available at TOA. There is the added expense of $100 an hour 
for the rental that doesn't help my effort to keep costs down. And most 
of these SLSA aircraft are not known for their docile behavior. I 
suspect that I might need more than a couple hours to master them. I 
also thought about finishing my Sport Pilot glider training and then 
just transition to airplane with no restrictions. 

These are all options, but it cost me about the same amount of money 
(with a lot of my labor thrown in) to do the rudder pedal conversion. 
And I have been considering offering my Ercoupe for training. The 
rudder pedals makes it a better platform for Sport Pilot training.
