FYI
Here is the rule in question

Sport pilot Rule

Amend §43.3 by revising paragraphs (c) and (g) to read as follows: §43.3
Persons authorized to perform maintenance, preventive maintenance, rebuilding,
and alterations.

  (g) Except for holders of a sport pilot certificate, the holder of a pilot
certificate issued under part 61 may perform preventive maintenance on any
aircraft owned or operated by that pilot which is not used under part 121, 129,
or 135 of this chapter. The holder of a sport pilot certificate may perform
preventive maintenance on an aircraft owned or operated by that pilot and
issued a special airworthiness certificate in the light-sport category.

As I read it, a current medical is required for all privileges EXCEPT those
specifically excluded in 61.23(b) and preventive maintenance is not listed
there. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, but I don’t think it’s supposed to…

If you revert to a sport pilot when your medical expires and a sport pilot is
not allowed to perform preventive maintenance, well, ….
