Well, if you don't have a "gyroscopic rate of turn indicator" and 
a "slip skid indicator"  you can't fly at night or VFR over the top 
conditions.  Not having a turn and slip indicator would be ok for 
sport pilot, but would hamper those who are not limited to sport 
pilot rules and would be fine for someone who never, ever gets caught 
in marginal VFR conditions.
Best bet is to have a turn and slip and get enough training to fly 
straight and level plus be able to make a 180 degree turn on partial 
panel instruments.  That would be two minutes of turn at half 
standard rate, which is a long, long time when the chips are down.
