Jim,

You are really getting ripped. Run, run, run very fast and far!

On July 18, 2008 I had my Ercoupe transponder ramp checked for $81.94
including tax to wit: (I am quoting my invoice)

Discrepancy: Perform 91.413

Action: Performed xpdr ramp check and found weak receiver sensitivity and
xmitter frequency approaching 1087 MHZ. Removed xpdr for bench calibration
and aligned receiver preselector, xmitter power, and xmitter frequency
output. Reassembled unit and bench tested to MPS. Returned unit to A/C and
ramp tested in compliance with FAR 91.413 requirements.

Hours 1.00 -- Labor $75.00 -- Parts $0.00 -- Task total $75.00

A ramp check without problems takes no more than 15 minutes. The unit does
not have to b removed, it must be checked in the A/C else how will they know
that it is working with the antenna and wiring.

On July 1, 2008 I had a totally dead transponder from my Cessna in the same
shop. It died on a trip to OKC. The repair consisted of replacing 5
transistors, 2 resistors, 2 insulators and a fuse. After the repairs were
completed the unit was reinstalled and ramp tested per FAR 91.413.

Hours 3.63 -- Labor $274.75 -- Parts $57.70 -- Task Total $332.45

Well, they are all making alot of money as the rates I received today from 4
different shops were from $ 197.50 at FDK , $ 300 at HGR, $200 at MRB and $
250 at JYO. And MRB says it must be a complete static test.

FDK is taking the transponder out of the Ercoupe, bench checking it,
replacing it in the aircraft and making the log book entries. They said the
labor is for 2.5 hours.

The required transponder check is covered in Part 43 Appendix F. It is a
radio check only, not a static test. No static tests are required unless
the aircraft is used for IFR.

If they're charging more than about $100, they're making a lot of money...
