Hi Lee,
The Ercoupe design, an inspired and superlative one, has suffered its
entire existence from myths and misinformation largely originating with
and perpetuated by persons who would not learn the truths and embrace
them.
Kevin, who is a knowledgeable owner of obvious standing, posed a
question as to whether or not others could "confirm" a new rumor by
hearsay. He didn't say he believed it, and I don't think his was a
"simple" question at all. Any possible "profiting" from the informed
"give and take" on this list requires that speculation (which may or
may not be credible) be separated from verifiable fact(s).
Of what possible benefit would any number of answers be saying "yeah,
I've heard that" with no information as to where, from whom or when,
and under what flight condition(s)? This is the process by which
rumors advance to the "status" of Ercoupe myth perpetuated without
basis in fact by the uninformed. That's why I tried to "turn" Kevin's
query for more productive response(s) so any facts lurking "out there"
might surface.
While the concept that Kevin sought further information on was
preposterous as put forth, and I believe such characterization
confirmed in its entirety by further information posted by Ed Burkhead
and Prof. Ed, no disrespect was due or intended to Kevin. To such
extent as anyone's feelings were hurt, I apologize.
The phenomena of "oil canning" in sheet metal is well documented and of
concern for reasons of metal fatigue. From the sheer number of coupes
still flying, any "problem" would seem to be minor; but any problem is
worth due consideration and remedy when possible.
Scott's response that he hears a sound crossing his own wake in a tight
turn in both his 415 and A-2A is such a response. He is clearly not
trying to stall his birds in a turn and hearing a "stall warning". He
is hearing the flexing of an aluminum structure subjected to the stress
of minor wake turbulence.
Since early belly skins without the stiffeners had a greater tendency
to exhibit this phenomena, it's interesting that his A-2A (which should
have reinforced belly skins) would make the same sound, whatever the
source.
Best regards,
William R. Bayne

Don't you just love it when a person asks a simple question and gets
jumped on like a herd of turtles. Such responses just might cause
someone to not ask a very good question and prevent us all from
profiting from the answer.
Take it easy Bill.
