What automatic carb heat control?

 

I remember Fred Weick telling about how he stopped having automatic carb
heat after the almost crash he experienced in, I think, his test plane the
jeep.

 

The automatic carb heat set itself to a partial setting during a low power
descent, if I remember correctly, and caused icing to occur.  If I recall
the story correctly, he was flying to an airport where the approach was over
water and they barely made the runway.

 

I hadn't heard of automatic carb heat on a production Coupe.  If it exists,
should it be removed?  Expert input?
