Gary. I think, the culprit here is the antennae.

 

Do you use the antennae of the handheld or one mounted to the airframe. You 
want the antennae as far away from the source of static (your engine) as 
possible.

 

With an external antennae, I'd believe that your reception come into an 
acceptable range.

Is anyne else using a handheld for their radio? I am using an older Icom-A6. I 
have swapped everything out, and now I dont have transmit at all. I do have 
plenty of static,etc. I am thinking of biting the bullet, and getting a panel 
mount aviation radio. Anyone out there using a handheld mounted to the panel 
with any success? If so, I would love to hear from you and how you have your 
system hooked up.
