I went to Radio Shack and bought some coax with suitable BNC connectors and
hooked my Sporty's handheld up to the ELT antenna for a while until I had a
regular communications radio installed. I bought the connectors to hook the
handheld up to my headseat and mike from Sporty's. Worked like a champ. The
ELT antenna is cut for 121.5 which is very close to VHF communications
frequencies and SWR was not a problem. In fact, if you want a good little
inexpensive exterior antenna to hook your handheld up to, ELT antennas are
really cheap. Like I said, all you need is an antenna cut to the approximate
freq.
And yes, while enroute, away from a controled area, I would re-hook the ELT
back up in case I went boom.
