Most importantly, check the airworthiness certificate. If it still says 415-C 
and was issued in the 40s or early 50s you are probably in the clear. The FAA 
has a definite proceedure for changing the model designation on the 
Airworthiness certificate and if it wasn't followed it remains a 415C. ( have 
letter from FAA to that effect)

 

But the CD will show if it was ever "legally" converted to a D

A common issue is a C model that gets converted to a D and then referred to as 
a CD (incorrectly) or as a C/D. I would get the FAA CD on it and see if 
paperwork was ever filed for a conversion.
