I agree. If the fire is on the ground I suggest getting out of the plane ASAP. If the fire is in the air I wonder how much good the steel panel is going to do you. I hear the steel panel is expensive.... wonder what an engine fire extinguisher would cost?

I think it is worth considering, but I wouldn't loose a whole lot of sleep over it. The only time it would be an issue is in the event of a fire in the engine compartment that cannot be controlled, by shutting the fuel off (two
places!) So, first I'd ensure the fuel shutoffs work as expected.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] stainless steel skin

John,

Do you think the stainless steel panel is a safety issue? I realize
that C models are not required to have it, but should we consider
adding it as a matter of safety?

<snip>
The stainless steel skin is required on the model D and later because of
differences between the regulations under which the C and CD are
certified
(CAR 4a Aircraft Specification A-718) and the D and later models were
certified under (CAR 3 Type Certificate Data Sheet A-787). Since 415-C's under the STC remain C's the stainless steel skin is not required. (CD's
already have it).
