You don't need to take out the internal batteries in the Garmin.

 

It will smartly recognize your external power supply and switch to it. Thu 
saving the internal batteries for emergency use.

I did it too. My voltage shows 7-8 volts with the battery installed in the GPS 
(296) so I assume I should take the internal GPS battery out to read bus 
voltage from the battery. I have mine hooked up to a cigarette lighter outlet. 
I'll try taking the GPS battery out tomorrow and see what happens.
