That had much more to do with inadequate testing -- for example, there was
*no* static testing of the complete first-stage propulsion system, none --
than with any inherent problem with large numbers of engines. 

(Similar dire predictions were made about the 8-engine cluster of the
Saturn I first stage, which worked flawlessly on every flight, including
surviving single-engine failures twice.)
