The MOST astronomy satellite recently passed its shake test (mandatory
for spacecraft). We were all a bit nervous because MOST is a seriously
low-cost spacecraft -- total cost about US$4M for a real astronomy
satellite slated to do real science -- and the methods were a whole lot
closer to radio-amateur standards than to the usual satellite practices.
There had been attention to proper design and construction but no previous
vibration testing. One fastener came loose -- a limited-insertions
locking fastener that had, it would seem, been inserted and removed once
too often -- and that was it.
