A note of caution:  in several places, Thompson's testimony to the CAIB
does not match solidly-documented historical fact (or reports from other
eyewitnesses).  Do not, repeat not, accept it as automatically reliable. 
It was a long time ago and he isn't remembering everything accurately. 

(One space-historian consultant to the Board, who happens to be a friend
of mine, described his work for them as "doing damage control on history".)

That said, I have no specific historical quarrels with the comments quoted
in that particular article.  People *do* forget these things if they
aren't properly written down, and the handoff from developers to operators
is a notorious point of information loss.
