As digital music trading becomes more and more accessible (as it should) and
the popularity of bands that allow taping continues to increase, i've
noticed that it's becoming much easier for people to share the music that
etree has tried to propagate. being in a college scene, i've been able to
see the availability of shows grow from a handful of people (mainly etree
subscribers) to a great deal of people sharing these same shows. however,
i've also noticed that a good number of these people who have become
involved in trading by means outside etree often have little understanding
(or regard in some cases) for documenting and preserving digital music
lineage.
I'll be the first to admit, 80% of the time i cannot tell a difference in
quality between a song/show ripped from mp3 and one converted from SHN (no
offense to audiophiles graced with spectacular audibility). however, i do
have respect for the long-term preservation that SHN affords. most casual
listeners outside etree (and other quality tree/vine/trading circles and
sites) are simply happy to get their hands on a show, and it's hard to
explain the importance of trading music by a loss-less compression when (to
most people) mp3 sounds perfectly loss-less to most listeners. even on
etree, i have made several snail mail trades and b&ps where the person i was
trading with failed to include a text file or account for the shows lineage
- great for me to listen to in the privacy of my own home/car, but
completely useless to trade.
my question to the list is this - as etree continues to grow, the
possibility of new subscribers entering the list with a previous stockpile
of shows burned outside the shn/dao/etc. method also grows. does etree
"management" and it's list subscribers have any ideas on how to keep clean
the lineage that etree has worked so hard to preserve?
