3 points:

1. here is a good test for testing if a recording is mp3 source:
http://www.faust.ab.ca/~trading/mp3bad.htm. i've used it and it has
performed very reliably for me.

2. if you really, really, really, (and I mean really care) about lineage and
taping rigs, then never do a trade with someone who doesn't have that info
posted, ask them to email you the md5's, and check them against the etree
database. if they are not in the database, or they do not match, don't trade
for it. seems fairly simple.

3. the quality topic isn't even worth discussing. you win some, you lose
some...but never forget, the music was (pretty much) free so just don't
trade with the guy ever again whose ratings are wacked...

thx.

You do have a point, Mike. But, the point brought up by the original
question...wondering how important knowing the rig info is...is equally
important, if not downright disturbing (to me, anyway).

You said "i've also noticed that a good number of these people who have
become involved in trading by means outside etree often have little
understanding
(or regard in some cases) for documenting and preserving digital music
lineage."

I, like Jim Morrison (we're allowed to joke about non-taper friendly bands,
right ?), put forth a proposition:
"I've noticed that a good number of people who have become involved in
trading through etree may understand how to document and preserve digital
music lineage, but don't pay as much attention to the quality of the
original recording". In other words, people are putting effort into
archiving and spreading some recordings that sound like ASS. A bit-perfect
copy of a shitty recording isn't gonna make that recording any better. In
some ways, I think people "hide behind" shns..."hey, it has been shn'ed. It
must be good"

Yeah, sure, blanks are cheap, and that is a nice way to justify responding
to every B&P offer that you can. Maybe most of you aren't as picky as I am,
but to me, it is frustrating to see a band/show offered on the list, reply
to that B&P and wait for your mailer to get back, only to get a recording
that is less than optimal and that I may never listen to.

One man's "A+" recording is another's "C" (Hunter was right...one man
gathers what another man spills), and there is no way to objectively grade a
particular recording. But, if I know what kind of rig was used and/or who
the taper was, I may be able to get an idea of what to expect. I, for one,
would love to see people put as much effort into keeping track of the
rig/source information as they do into keeping track of the md5's and
whether there was a DAE generation.

Wherever he goes, the people all complain...

wob...I have this recording...it was made on a sony stereo mic and minidisc
which I set up right on the back bar (don't worry...you can barely hear the
bartender over the clinking of bottles...and you can only hear my lighter
when I used it to light up my rig for the 74 minute disc flip)...but, hey,
it's shn'ed ;-)

As digital music trading becomes more and more accessible (as it should) and
the popularity of bands that allow taping continues to increase, i've
noticed that it's becoming much easier for people to share the music that
etree has tried to propagate. being in a college scene, i've been able to
see the availability of shows grow from a handful of people (mainly etree
subscribers) to a great deal of people sharing these same shows. however,
i've also noticed that a good number of these people who have become
involved in trading by means outside etree often have little understanding
(or regard in some cases) for documenting and preserving digital music
lineage.
I'll be the first to admit, 80% of the time i cannot tell a difference in
quality between a song/show ripped from mp3 and one converted from SHN (no
offense to audiophiles graced with spectacular audibility). however, i do
have respect for the long-term preservation that SHN affords. most casual
listeners outside etree (and other quality tree/vine/trading circles and
sites) are simply happy to get their hands on a show, and it's hard to
explain the importance of trading music by a loss-less compression when (to
most people) mp3 sounds perfectly loss-less to most listeners. even on
etree, i have made several snail mail trades and b&ps where the person i was
trading with failed to include a text file or account for the shows lineage
- great for me to listen to in the privacy of my own home/car, but
completely useless to trade.
my question to the list is this - as etree continues to grow, the
possibility of new subscribers entering the list with a previous stockpile
of shows burned outside the shn/dao/etc. method also grows. does etree
"management" and it's list subscribers have any ideas on how to keep clean
the lineage that etree has worked so hard to preserve?
