Without getting too heavily into the great Clench vs Unclench debate, I
will say that just because they "can't" doesn't mean they wouldn't try, and
cause a lot of hassle for etree (lists & db, server team & siteops) in the
process. And with Draconian laws in place in the US like the Digital
Millennium Copyright Act, I wouldn't necessarily say they "can't" succeed.
Hell, there's probably something in the USA PATRIOT Act that would brand
you a terrorist for requesting that unauthorized recording of "Us and
Them." So I think the folks who run etree are being prudent in leaning
towards "clench" on this issue.

Others have commented that a filter on the etrade list would be fairly easy
to circumvent. A more bulletproof approach would be to create a web form
for submission of ISOs (with output sent to the etrade list), so that users
would only be able to select from authorized bands. There probably also
would need to be a free-form comments field where people could write
anything they want (quirky details of WOB tax offers etc) and it's possible
a taper-unfriendly band could get mentioned there. But the instructions on
the form would be clear -- and right in front of the user; no digging
through FAQs -- and thus should eliminate the innocent mistakes, which I'm
going to presume are mostly if not entirely what we've been seeing here
lately.

Maybe also have a web form for etrade offers (b&p, freebies etc outside of
those made to the announce list) and closed msgs and make it impossible for
users to post to etrade other than through a web form. Then there would be
greatly reduced need for moderation and significantly reduced traffic on
that list.
