It's getting hard to keep my 2c out with all these wonderful ideas and
comments, so:

First of all, the UofO network is not available to the public and won't
ever likely be. They are using
a firm called Metricom for their wireless net and from what I hear Metricom
is going through
bankruptcy. Similar nets by the same firm are run at OSU and PSU. Metricom
was a client
of my former employer btw.

Good luck getting bandwidth from EWEB. I think you'd have to bribe all the
board members. I'd
have better luck getting a job there. I would hit up Sony, Hyundai, SP, etc
for donations before
trying any public sector sponsorship.

I think we discussed the technical stuff awhile back.....the system Clipper
uses has some quirks and
costs...may be why they don't have a lot of @home users. The Wavelan
devices are costly for the hub
end and there is a small, finite (maybe 7-10) users per unit node. You need
a separate antenna or a very
costly combining system for each node-hub device. With Clipper's system
most users will not surf the net in the living room on their
notebook...their 2 hubs are on Coburg Ridge and Blanton Hts. I ran the site
at Blanton where Clipper installed their gear initially and helped Jerry
Nichols (r.i.p.) install the gear and
antennas.

Other systems may allow for more bandwidth or users per node, but then you
need nodes closer to
user clusters rather than more nodes. Currently, there is no *cheap*
solution to some very real problems
such as external antennas & amplifiers (you need FCC licences for high
power devices) and T1+ bandwidth via radio.

I'd be happy to help out anyone who wants to attempt this. I have plenty of
experience here, plus I've
been doing ip over ax.25 for about 10 years.
