As you collect solutions, please post them here. There are a lot of
people who would like to know just how usefuly new users find programs
like GIMP, LyX, OpenOffice, etc.

(And whatever happened to the acrobat distiller server for Linux?)

You might find this article on GIMP vs Photoshop worth reading:

I'm not offering this as a solution. I'm just taking the opportunity
to provide info on a way to get the old Wordperfect 8 for Linux running
with current distros.

With much hunting you might find a copy of WordPerfect 8 for Linux. If
you happen to find one, some patching is required:

Filtrx (the One Billion Second bug) fix:

Ghostscript printing bug fix:

Satisfying its libc5 dependency -- notes on getting WP8 working with
Mandrake 8.1, something similar can be done for other distros (taken
from another user's experience):

1) Install the libc-5 package from the third disk of Mandrake 8.1 or
from the Cooker archive. The libc-5.3.12-36mdk from the Cooker
archive seems to work.
2) Install ld.so package from an old Mandrake version. You can try
ld.so-1.9.5-13mdk from Mandrake 7.0. You may also be able to use the
package from 7.1 or 7.2, but if you have problems with package
conflicts, Mandrake 7.0 ld.so seems to work.
