This is kind of interesting considering my SAFT STM-180's
have aluminum brackets around the case exterior.
We never used them on the TEVan, but I guess they where
put there for a cooling system.
All of the AL brackets have never exhibited any deteriation.
I've also spilled KOH gook on my hands directly from the
valves, even in full concentration.  I washed my hands off and
I still have skin (it is very slippery when washing the hands though).
I'm sure this would not be nice if the battery was smashed and the KOH
was in my eyes, but I also would not like to have a ruptured gas tank
and have gas in my eyes from my dirt bike.
It's my uneducated opinion that SAFT NiCd's are no more dangerous
than a gas powered anything.
