Had real good luck with sandblasting to bare metal, and rustoluem, then
a lite coat of Roofing tar, the stuff that is brushable. EVen though it duz
sorta "dry" it' stays sorta gooey, an' sticky. But ya don't care, yur not
handling it anymore when yu put the batteries in. Tar is cheap, comes in 1
quart and 1 gal cans at True Value. on the ourside I sprayed undercoat on
everything underneith. Sopped in to all the places that water could get, and
it looks nice, too. 4 years, and counting.,over 40k miles@ 60 or so a
day. There USED to be called a paint "Asphaultium" Had some years ago, worked
like the tar above. Nobody's heard of it anymore. Ask for it at Home Despot,
and ya get a blank look.
