What? The guy says he makes less. He doesn't say net or gross, just less. If he's paying all his costs, which the article suggests that he is, then he is aware of income and expenses.
Based on what is written, he makes less. If not for the double tips and fuel cost savings, it would be worse. In spite of that, he loves it.
