It's not a matter of taking the trouble to look sooner. In order to see the crosswalk from this particular approach, I need to lean to the right (driver sits on the left) to roughly the center of the vehicle in order to see around the pillar. That is sometimes awkward to do while negotiating traffic and obstructions.
I believe you also have Leaf? Have you not observed this when turning right? The pillar is substantially larger than on other cars. All cars have this problem to some degree, but I've never seen anything as extreme as with the Leaf. I doubt there's much Nissan can do to fix existing Leafs. But over the last few years, they could address the design for new models.
