One of the reasons for using smelly diesel on a sailboat is safety.  It's also 
more efficient.  However you only need a generator and that can be diesel or 
even wind/solar if needs be.  That is if you are crusing.  If you day sail you 
can store more than enough energy at the dock. You only need motive power to 
get to and from the dock. Make sure your know your mission and the rest will 
fall in place.  I worked in Carl Eichenlaub's shop in the 70's when I was a 
starving musician...still am.  He converted a small tug boat to electric power. 
 Never used a generator. Always charged at the dock.  Lawrence Rhodes......
