A few things about sailboats.  I don't agree with Jerry that light boats are
ideal.  This is only true if your are motoring for long distances.  In many
cases you only motor in and out of the harbor as sailing a 40 foot boat to a
dock takes extreme skill.  Sometimes you motor to go upwind because you just
don't want to sail into the wind.  When we delivered Cadenza a 40 foot racing
sailboat from San Diego to San Francisco we sailed up the coast when the wind
was favorable but from Santa Barbara(that's when the hammer comes down wind
wise) we motored to Santa Cruz.  It was a horrible two days of pounding through
large waves diesel smell, cigar smoke but the good stories kept my spirits up.
I remember stopping once for fuel.  This is not something electricity could do
unless you had three tons of batteries.  So some missions are not possible with
current technology.  It's a straight 2 day run 24/7.  What electric technology
can do that?
Pushing 20 thousand pounds through high waves.  Now maybe some one could
figure out how to recapture some of that energy with something similar to one
of those shaken lights.  Sailing itself is what you do with a sail boat and
really the motor is just there to get you out of trouble and to and from a
dock.  There is also on board electronics and lights but solar & a small wind
generator could do that while sailing.  There are reverse prop devices that can
generate while sailing.  So a total solution would be Solar, wind & hydro
charging as well as possible kinetic chargers.  It's now possible to generate 6
amps while sailing that may not seem like much but when you sail for days and
motor into the harbor it would be more than enough.  Lawrence Rhodes
